Talkeetna Mountains Backcountry
|
The Talkeetna Mountains comprise a very large undeveloped backcountry area in interior Alaska north of Anchorage and south of the Alaska Range. One of the less visited and most undeveloped areas in Alaska, the Talkeetnas are a favorite mountain getaway for many outdoor enthusiasts in Alaska (as well as site of many NOLS wilderness courses).
More moderate in elevation than the nearby Alaska Range, the Talkeetna mountains are a geologically older range and provide ideal hiking in trailless, treeless tundra with several areas of more rocky, glaciated peaks. In some regions, excellent views of Denali and other large peaks of the Alaska Range can be found on clear days.
With local knowledge of exactly where to find unmarked roads and access points, the Tallkeetna Mountains can offer a unique wilderness experience. Our backcountry planners have been backpacking and canoeing in the Talkeetna Mountains for over 20 years and can expand your destination options beyond the same routes guides visit repeadtedly.
