    Alaska Backcountry Consulting provides local, expert advice for independent travelers to Alaska's backcountry. As an alternative to expensive guiding services, we sell custom Backcountry Plans for travelers who have the necessary experience to lead their own backcountry trips but lack the local, professional knowledge that is normally only offered with a guide.

    Our lead backcountry planner prepares all backcountry plans and has recreated in the backcountry of Alaska for 20 years and conducted field research throughout much of Alaska's backcountry in the fields of wildlife studies, plant ecology and glaciology. We offer expert advice that can only be obtained with decades of backcountry travel experience in Alaska.

    Each Custom Backcountry Plan includes:

•     Personal expedition planning to help you choose the optimal destination, seasonal timing and route for your expedition

•     Custom 1:63,360 scale USGS topographic quads with complete expedition route & alternates marked (Except digital format plans which include one digital 1:250,000 scale USGS topo)

•     Complete wildlife & plant species lists plus geologic & native cultural information specific to your destination

•     Detailed descriptions of Alaskan backcountry camping techniques including cooking & sleeping with grizzly bears, emergency communication with bush planes, crossing glacial rivers, avoiding impassable terrain unmarked on maps, navigation in trailless tundra, and much more

•     Complete personal & group gear lists with Alaska-specific information on first aid & safety
